In this reprint a total Lagrangian dynamic finite element formulation is developed for the six degree of freedom constant-strain triangular element. In the formulation developed in this paper, the element may undergo large translational and rotational displacements. The formulation presented can be of use in many applications related to multibody dynamics wherein systems are assumed to consist of interconnected deformable bodies each of which may undergo large translational and rotational displacements. For convenience of describing the relative motion between interconnected bodies, two sets of generalized coordinates are employed in order to identify the configuration of the constant-strain triangular element used in the finite element discretization of the deformable bodies. These two sets are the reference and elastic coordinates. The reference coordinates define the location and orientation of a selected deformable body reference, while the elastic coordinates are the nodal coordinates that describe the displacement of selected nodal points in the finite element discretization.
