Air Traffic Controller Scanning and Eye Movements in Search of Information - A Literature Review

The Federal Aviation Administration is engaged in an on-going research effort designed to help air traffic controllers reduce the frequency of operational errors. This literature search and review was a first step in the study of controller scanning for information. Results indicate that the study of eye movement is a very complex process even given the current technology available. Another finding is that there has been very little accomplished in the study of air traffic controllers scanning and eye movements. The field is wide open and the potential benefits are large.
