Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP): The User Interface for the Fabrication Module of the Rapid Design System.

The Rapid Design System (RDS) is a feature based design, fabrication, and inspection system. Research and development of the RDS has been sponsored by the United States Air Force. The Fabrication Planning (FP) Module of the RDS is being developed by the University of Dayton. The FP module automatically creates a process plan for machining a metal part. The research addressed herein deals with the User Interface for the review and modification of a process plan. The Fabrication Planning Module automatically creates a plan using information from the Feature Based Design Environment (FBDE) of the RDS. It integrates this information with the information received from a program/database called MetCAPpTm. The process plan is created in a series of steps: feature translation, feature sequencing, setup generation, and operations generation. The purpose of the Planning Window and User Interface is to give a designer, machinists, or process planner the ability to automatically generate and manipulate a complete process plan.
