We carried out an experimental study to verify a proposed theory for achromaticvolume holography using dispersive compensation in photorefractive barium titanate crystals. Compensation of the phase mismatch was observed and was consistent with the theory. Recently Cronin-Golomb suggested and theoretically analyzed a method for recording volume holograms with broadband light sources by using the combination of material and grating dispersions. As in the case of the photorefractive rainbow investigated by Salamo et al., the phase mismatch between gratings written by different optical frequencies can be largely compensated for by the dispersion of the recording medium if it is properly tilted. In this Letter we report experimental results demonstrating such an effect in photorefractive barium titanate crystal.
