摘要

Navy recruits who have not attained a traditional high school diploma (NHSDGs) fail to complete their first-term enlistments at twice the rate of diploma graduates (HSDGs). However, research shows that the highest quality NHSDG recruits complete obligated service at a rate similar to HSDGs. The objective of this research was to develop a compensatory screening model (CSM) for selecting Navy NHSDG applicants. The CSM is intended to address Congressional concerns about the treatment of applicants in the alternative credential categories who have demonstrated attrition rates comparable to those of HSDGs. The model predicts the probability that the applicant will complete the first 24 months of enlistment, conditional upon the following predictors: number of years of education completed, educational credential attained, age at application, Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) category, employment status, participation in a military youth program, and moral waiver status. Evaluation analyses demonstrate that the model provides significant increases in predictive validity over those of both AFQT percentile and the Success Chances for Recruits Entering the Navy (SCREEN) formula, due to inclusion of the biographical predictors. An operational test and evaluation has commenced to evaluate the CSM in the operational recruiting environment. Attrition, Enlistment screening, Biographical data, Compensatory screening model.
