This technical report if divided into four volumes. Volume I presents Summary andRecommendations, Volume II contains Catchment System Evaluation and Separation Methods, Volume III contains an Economic Comparison of Disposal Options, and Volume IV documents Bench-Scale Tests for Separation. Phase I activities are described for 'Separation of Depleted Uranium Fragments from Gun Test Catchments, Vol. II,' sponsored by the Air Force Engineering Services Center, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida. The purpose of the work is the development of improved means for separating DU projectile fragments form target materials, principally sand. Phase I activities included (1) literature review of separations technology, (2) site visits, (3) analysis and description of current operations, (4) sampling and analysis of target sand material, and (5) evaluation of alternatives to sand as the bullet-stopping medium. Alternatives to the current separation and disposal procedures are identified which would result in significant cost savings over the life of the test facility. The most significant factor is an improved screening procedure that increases the usable sand life and decreases disposal costs. No suitable alternatives to sand as the bullet-stopping medium were found.
