Distance Learning: Part of the National Performance Review Initiative onEducation

摘要

This study of the National Information Infrastructure (NIL) was conducted as partof IDA's Central Research Program. Education, to include distance learning, is one of seven key initiatives that the Clinton administration's National Performance Review (NPR) found could be impacted through the implementation of advanced information technology. Distance Learning is a general term used to cover the broad range of teaching and learning events in which the student is separated from the instructor, or other students, by distance and/or time. It includes such scenarios as computers in the classroom or work place, local area networks on a college campus, remote training, and access to educational opportunities from the home. Numerous agencies within the government, private, and public sectors are committed to improving the overall educational process in this country through the implementation of advanced information technology. The objective of this paper is to enhance IDA's understanding of the activities, organizations, and issues related to the application of distance learning, as part of the NIL.
