This report describes and documents only the work performed by the PhysicalSimulation Team in the Physical Simulation Laboratory using the Ride Motion Simulator (RMS). The Physical Simulation Team conducted an experiment using the RMS for the Crewman's Associate Team along with the Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to examine soldier performance using a flat panel display and two controllers while in a motion environment. The purpose of this study was to measure and compare turret slewing and tracking performance with the conventional, displacement yoke used in the M-1 tank, and a fixed yoke incorporating a thumb-operated tracking control. This report does not incorporate the findings of ARL, it only represents the work done on the RMS during these tests. The tests were jointly executed by the Simulation Area (AMSTA-TR-D) and ARL, in Building 215, at TARDEC from 16 October to 9 November 1995.
