Like most chemical engineering curricula,the chemical and biomolecular engineering curriculum at North Carolina State University begins with a course on material and energy balances,historically designated the "stoichiometry course."For much of its history,the course was generally feared and despised by students,with their descriptions of it invariably including the term "weed-out."They were put off by the fragmented nature of the subject matter,which appeared to be a hodgepodge of loosely related concepts from physical chemistry.
