Upstream oil and gas operations in Nigeria are becoming more challenging for foreign firms as security in the Niger delta producing region deteriorates. Nigerian oil production is down to around 1.5mn b/d because of rebel attacks, oil minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu says. This is close to its lowest level since 1989 and below the 2.2mn b/d expected by the government in its national budget for this year. Production disruptions have continued this month. Shell declared force majeure on exports of Bonny Light crude on 12 August because of a leak on the 600,000 b/d Nembe Creek Trunk line. And the company declared force majeure on gas deliveries to the 22mn t/yr Bonny Island LNG plant on 8 August because of a leak on the Eastern Gas Gathering System pipeline.
