Mideast Gulf Arab states are showing signs of prudence in government spend- ing, following years of expansionary fiscal policies. Economic growth in the Gulf countries still relies on state-backed projects, forcing the governments to sus- tain high levels of spending on infrastruc- ture. But many states in the region seem to have backtracked on the spending spree on which they embarked last year amid fears that the protests that rattled many Arab countries could spark unrest at home (WPA, 25 July 2011, p4).
