A research has shown that garden-variety graphics cards can pose a serious threat to password security. It is found that GPUs designed to process huge volumes of data in parallel specifically to render 3D graphics for games can be used for password cracking. This is made possible by testing every possible combination of characters in a password, rather than checking a list of possible words in dictionary attack. Lengthening passwords, such as 12 characters long, makes them exponentially more difficult to crack by brute force. A good password manager can generate strong passwords and provide secure storage and input without displaying passwords in plain text. Many password managers such as 1Password allows a user to create multiple distinct personas that use different password types. A free, open-source option KeePass allows the use of the same password database on all devices and it is very convenient.
