摘要

Sydney was once seen as a city hostile to cyclists, but is now winning a reputation for being bike-friendly, Mike Harris tells Deniz Huseyin. Not that long ago central Sydney was seen as a treacherous place to cycle. Indeed, the esteemed US transport academic John Pucher described it as "the city that hates bikes". In 2010, having spent a year in the city researching ways to boost bike riding, he said: "I did not cycle that often because I almost got killed several times - people cutting me off, squeezing me off the road and not stopping. Whether I was a pedestrian or cyclist I found the level of the hostility of enough Sydney motorists worse than I had seen anywhere in the world."
