IN THE WORLD of Japanese classical music, several conductors in their 30s have started to make their way to the forefront. Among them, Seikyo Kim (31) has recently been attracting the most attention, both for his talent and his popularity. On top of this, Kim has intelligent, handsome features, and he has become the undoubted favorite among younger women.Seikyo Kim, who is of Korean descent, was born in Osaka, Japan. He began learning the piano when he was three, and the viola when he was seven. At the age of 14, he moved to the United States with his family. He studied philosophy at Boston University, and then went on to major in conducting at the graduate program of the New England Conservatory of Music. After graduating, Kim went to study in Vienna, Austria. He has studied under such renowned conductors as Seiji Ozawa, and in 1998 he won the Nicolai Malko International Conducting Competition, which propelled him to worldwide fame. Though based in Japan, Kim has been working more and more outside his home country.
