Endoscopic ultrasound should be performed before endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in all patients with mild acute gallstone pancreatitis

In the past, endoscopic retrograde cholan-giopancreatography (ERCP) was performed for all patients with suspected gallstone pancreatitis in the setting of biliary obstruction. Current practice guidelines suggest that ERCP should be performed in all patients with cholangitis or those with a rising bilirubin level in the setting of biliary obstruction. Patients with mild acute gallstone pancreatitis typically have stones 5 mm or less in diameter.
