The Armored Scale: Duplachionaspis Divergens (Green), a New Pest of Sugarcane Detected Recently in Mexico

In recent years there have been many new emerging pests reported in sugarcane. Some of these were previously known to infest sugarcane, but others were initially reported from other cultivated hosts. One these insect that is emerging as a potentiallyharmful pest to the cultivation of sugarcane in the western hemisphere is the armored scale Duplachionaspis divergens (Green) (Hemiptera: Diaspidiae). It had not been reported from Mexico, but in late 2013 some populations of this pest were found in isolated commercial sugarcane fields in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca as well as on some potential new cultivars at the experimental regional station of Central Motzorongo Sugar Mill (CERMOTZ).
