Landscape in a Residential Site Development Winner: Tupelo Farm, Charlottesville, VA

Owners of the 1870s farmhouse property in Albemarle County, VA, had a mission to create an outdoor environment that befitted the farm's history, incorporated local craftsmanship and materials, and provided modern practicalities. Charlottesville Landscape Architects Nelson Byrd Woltz and Thomas Woltz, were hired to accomplish this feat for the Tupelo Farm project. A distinguished characteristic of the farm is that the architects drew on the landscape's unique backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, nearby streams, indigenous vegetation, and local farming history. There is a visual connection to these features as well as "geologic and hydrolic" associations, as described by Nelson Byrd Woltz.
