Coating Experience on Ceramic Surfaces: An overview of coating systems on glazed and unglazed ceramic surfaces, which are based on nano-technology

Ceramics is not equal to ceramics and nano-coating not equal to nano-coating, would have the heading to this article actually to be called. Some years ago high-sounding advertisement promised to the customer surfaces which could be cleaned easily. In the future we never again would have to clean, which just in the domestic range (bath and kitchen) remains a dream. Nevertheless it can be maintained that surfaces, which can be cleaned easily (easy-to-clean), belong today in many ranges to the state-of-the-art. Easy-to-clean is to be understood here as a durable function on e.g. ceramic surfaces, which promise to the customer a clear advantage. Although the cleaning is important and necessary, even if the expenditure is clearly smaller. The necessary expenditure of time, however, can be reduced clearly and substantially less strong detergents can be used. Even if coatings on ceramic surfaces belong in the meantime to the state-of-the-art, then it requires nevertheless a strongly differentiated closer inspection to be able to differ a good coating from others. In large numbers we find on the field of nano-technology coatings in the meantime, which are designated as "home-products". Usually there are universal coatings with those both e.g. showering running walls and sanitary ceramics equally can be coated. The durability of the easy-to-clean effect usually is only from short duration. In contrast for this many manufacturers already offer factory-installed coatings. These are normally cut up to production processes and are offered to the customer as a surface refinement with the appropriate increase in value. Enterprises, which offer such coatings and whose products increase in price thereby, however can guarantee the promised characteristics to the customer. The fact that these products apart from the anyway high in-house quality requirements must overcome also the hurdles of external institutes, usually verified by appropriate certificates, speak its own language.
