Analysis of the strengthening curves of 90, 70, and 80 steel wire reveals three stages of strengthening in the true-deformation ranges 0-0.25,0.25-2.0, and 2.0-4.0, characterized by near-linear curves in the coordinates DELTA_(sigma_b) and mu~(1/4). The strengthening parameters in the second and third stages have been determined, and possible strengthening mechanisms have been considered. The slope of the strengthening curves in the second stage increases with increase in carbon content in the steel and isothermal-transformation temperature and with decrease in billet diameter. In the third stage, strengthening is characterized by an analogous curve; sharp reduction in strengthening rates also appears on account of the initial stage of cementite coagulation associated with increased heating on diffusion.
