This article looks at SA's changing spending habits, with information supplied byACNielsen. South Africa's consumer landscape is constantly evolving. Ten years on from the country's democratic birth, the population has increased by 16%, while housinghas grown at an even faster rate of 27%. Higher even than the phenomenal housing growth, has been the increase in retailers over this time. Between 1994 and 2004, over 547 new stores have opened within the organised trade grocery retail sector, equallinga growth of 46%. Nigel Thatcher, retail services director at ACNielsen South Africa, explains how these stores have been fairly evenly split between corporates like Shoprite and Pick 'n Pay and franchise groups like Spar, Pick 'n Pay Family and USave. Adding onto this figure is that of service station/garage forecourt stores, approximately 1 420 of which have sprung up over the same period.
