Life for rural families in the Gamo Gof a highlands of southwest Ethiopia is precarious. With average farm sizes just half-a-hectare, soils depleted, and rainfall unpredictable, families often need food aid to survive the "hungry months" between harvests. Yet this year, although the spring rains failed, some farmers are managing to produce enough food to feed their families, plus a surplus to sell. They are members of the Highlands Community Development Project (HiCoDep), which provides families withsheep and other livestock - and, crucially, with the skills to integrate those animals into a sustainable farming system.
