Hari Maya and, Krishna Kumari talked and laughed as they waited for their water pots to fill at the tap stand. The morning sun was on them as they chatted and glanced down toward the river flowing some way below, accessible via a small winding path which took half an hour to descend-and an additional full hour to climb when carrying a heavy water pot. The tap placed near their hillside homes made a substantial reduction in one of the timeless burdens visited on rural women, that of spending hours each day collecting and transporting water. In the few minutes it took to catch up on each other's news, the women's water pots were full, they helped each other hoist them on their backs, and soon they were home attending to other duties.
