The Use of Hetastarch as Adjunct Therapy in 26 Dogs With Hypoalbuminemia: A Phase Two Clinical Trial

Albumin provides at least 75% of normal plasma colloid on-cotic pressure. Disease-related hypoal-buminemia decreases colloid oncotic pressure, which may be associated with loss of fluid from the intravascular space into the interstitium and body cavities. In this situation, low plasma volume and pulmonary edema can be life-threatening sequelae. The safety and efficacy of the synthetic colloid hetastarch were evaluated in 26 dogs with hypoalbuminemia.
