Alcholic extracts of the red alga Acanthophora spicifera from the vicinity of Mandapam coast was tested for its tumoricidal effect in Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma cells developed in mice. Acanthophora spicifera exhibited tumoricidal activity at a doseof 20 mg/ kg b.w as compared to the standard drug, 5-flurouracil. This was evidenced by the increase in the mean survival time, decrease in tumor volume and viable cell count. The smear study exhibited membrane blebbing, vacuole formation and reduction in staining intensity, which further ascertained the tumoricidal activity.
