Making PhRMA the great convener: Chin's new quest

Dr Chin's career has included almost three decades in academia and another 10-plus years in industry - with a focus over much of the past several years on cultivating collaborations between the two sectors.Dr Chin is now taking on Washington, setting his sights on making PhRMA the great convener of science, medicine and drug development, while ensuring government and the various patient advocacy groups are active players.Dr Chin, who joined PhRMA in July as executive vice-president of science and regulatory affairs, said his new pursuit not only includes bringing people together to understand the power and importance of collaborative partnerships, but also improving and strengthening the voice of the biopharma industry in the scientific ecosystem.Dr Chin said his work at PhRMA is not unlike that of the iconic Smokey the Bear-preventing fires before they start rather than being in a reactive mode. "My job is to be thinking of what are the important projects that need to be done in a proactive way" he says.Part of Dr Chin's charge at PhRMA is bringing the various groups together early in the conversations to help define the problems everybody agrees need to be fixed. Even though the knowledge of science and medicine currently enjoy a time of rapid progression, there remains a great unmet need for new therapies in many diseases, such as Alzheimer's, depression, schizophrenia, bone disease and various cancers, Dr Chin says.
