U.S. Recyclers Form European Processing Ventures

Two U.S. recycling concerns have each recently announced that they are putting together joint venture companies with some European firms. In one of the arrangements, Huron Valley Steel Corp. (Belleville, Mich.) is teaming up with two Brussels-based firms- Union Miniere SA and Limburgse Participatie Maatschappij-to recover nonferrous scrap from shredded vehicles and white goods. The joint-venture firm, named Huron Valley Europe, is set to build a processing plant in Overpelt, Belgium (the site of Union Miniere's existing scrap recycling operations), that will use automated non-ferrous separation technology developed by Huron Valley to recover aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, and zinc from shredder streams. The venture is being established as a limited liability company in Belgium, with Huron Valley serving as the majority shareholder. This operation, which is expected to employ 80 people, is Huron Valley's first outside the United States and sixth overall.
