Smart Sensors:Fact or Fiction?

In this era of high technology,high-speed/high-throughput microprocessors,autonomous vehicles and intelligent systems,what is the reality of "smart" sensors-that is,sensors coupled to an embedded processor?Clearly the problem does not reside entirely in the hardware or software limitations per se,but possibly with our understanding of the underlying phenomenology dictating the required measurements to be accomplished.
