An optical slab shape measuring system was developed for measuring slab shape parameters, such as width, thickness, bulge and camber. The system consists of two side-figure measuring modules. Each module consists of a structured laser and two-dimensional CCD camera. In order to exclude the severe background light, the system uses a band-pass filter, with its central wavelength corresponding to the laser source. During inspection, the system utilizes the mapping function technique to transform image coordinates to those in the real world. Each module calculates its corresponding side figure, like thickness and bulge. By integrating coordinates of both modules, the shape parameters, width and wedge are obtained. The quantity of camber is obtained by calculating the deflection from the whole sequence of side figure. Besides, inspection results can be delivered to the process computer via industrial network. This facilitates process analysis and feedback.
