Like seed marketers in other industry segments, vegetable and flower seed marketers are confronted with many issues this year. Some issues are as basic as not having ample supplies of quality seed because certain industry segments are experiencing above normal shortages, says Rick Mitchell, director, fresh market sales, Syngenta Seeds, Boise, Idaho, and ASTA Vegetable & Flower Seed Division chair. At the same time, customers continue to consolidate and are looking to control costs. "While seeds provide a very valuable input component of the equation, they are not immune from increased demands for improved efficiency contributions," says Mitchell. "Cost control, but perhaps more importantly, effective management of investments and resource prioritization will be critical for seed companies in this environment."
