A mastodon sculpture made of scrap metal guards the entrance to Headwaters Park in downtown Fort Wayne, Ind., serving as an impressive but silent ambassador for the recycling industry. The mastodon was commissioned by OmniSource Corp. as part of Indianan University-Purdue University Fort Wayne's 40th anniversary fundraiser, explains Ben Eisbart, the company's executive vice president of administration. "The university's concept was to have various companies and organizations each adopt a fiberglass model and create their version of a mastodon, the school mascot," he says. The school, which hoped to get 40 entries, ultimately received 105.
