Salmon farming companies still account for the bulk of Chile's aqua-culture harvests and exports, however the current crisis in the salmon farming industry means Chile needs to diversify and step up the commercial development of other species. Beforethe crisis various companies had already ventured into other species, especially mussels. Based on data of Chile's Directorate of Fisheries (Sernapesca), Chile had fish and mollusc harvests of 170,000 metric tons up to February 2009, down 4 percent fromthe same period of 2008.
