After the long and devastating collapse of the Russian seafood industry in the 1990s, it is now well on its way to recovery, with a growing market for second-hand equipment. Igor Emilianov reports. The Russian processing industry is progressing at break-neck speed and is looking to modernise and expand its use of equipment. Several positive changes in the industry, such as five year capture quota shares and improvements in legislation have made it less risky and more attractive to investors so it isthe prime time for mechanisation to take place. Although you can find some well-equipped, modern factories in Russia right now, the main industrial base of existing fish businesses were created a long time ago and the infrastructure is unable to meet modern market demands. Technical modernisation is therefore badly needed to raise efficiency of all processes and to produce new goods.
