Poland gears up for life without Russian gas

Poland is boosting its LNG import capacity by 50pc by December 2021 to further diversify its gas supply before a contract for Russian pipeline imports expires at the end of 2020. State-owned Polskie LNG awarded a 123mn zloty ($31mn) construction contract this week for the expansion of its 3.6mn t/yr Swinoujscie import terminal on the Baltic Sea to 5.4mn t/yr (7.5bn m~3/yr of pipeline gas) by Decem- ber next year. In the longer term, Polskie LNG wants to build a third LNG storage tank and a second berth for LNG tankers at Swinoujscie, although these plans are not within the scope of the contract signed this week.
