Joe Cave and his team are well-remembered for their ground-breaking developments as salmon farmers in the 1980s. Jenny Haworth talks to Joe about salmon farming, disease and southern ingenuity. In the mid-1980s, salmon was considered one of the stocksin which to invest. So Joe Cave, Paul and Mandy Burrows, Steve Richards, Evan France and Fritz Jury decided to pool resources and know-how and set up the Stewart Island Salmon Company. "This company was very much a cooperative effort. All those involvedused to discuss our ideas, then we would go off and try to implement them," Joe said. Joe was already well-known in the fishing industry, having started crayfishing in Fiordland in 1967 before he set up the salmon company.
