As contractors prepare for 2020, they face even more uncertainty than usual regarding the business outlook. They may find more projects to bid on than workers to build them, or they could be caught in a sudden economic downdraft. Early indications have been largely favorable. Of the nearly 2,000 respondents to the 2019 Autodesk-AGC of America Workforce Survey (see story on page 34) that AGC released on August 27, more than nine out of 10 said they expect their firm will hire workers in the coming 12 months, either for expansion (19 percent) or replacement (72 percent). That's a strong sign that AGC members expect the volume of work to increase or at least hold steady.
