Life is full of competing priorities, including family and business responsibilities. As scrap recyclers, among your many responsibilities you have the task of protecting the lives of your employees as well as visitors to your facilities, such as suppliers, government officials, and public guests. This is a tremendous responsibility, and the best way to fulfill it is to have stringent, well-documented safety rules and procedures. Verbal instructions are not enough. As safety professionals and OSHA regulators will tell you, "If it isn't documented, it doesn't exist or didn't happen." I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get slapped with judgments and legal expenses simply because they hadn't documented their safety procedures. They might have excellent safety programs, but they got slammed because they couldn't produce written proof of their procedures or prove that they had properly disseminated the rules to their employees and visitors. Don't make the same mistake in your operations.
