Nearly two years ago, ISRI expanded its safety program to include a focus on transportation safety. We did this because the loss statistics from the ISRI-sponsored RecycleGuard~R insurance program revealed a significant upward trend in transportation-related accidents and injuries in the scrap recycling industry. Over a seven-year period, these losses totaled nearly 11 million dollars in workers' compensation expenses alone. Loss values in third-party injuries and damages to member vehicles and the property of others were nearly 15 million dollars. Industrywide costs are likely even greater given that the RecycleGuard program does not cover all recycling companies. Thus, though scrap operators pay close attention to accident- and injury-reduction activities in their facilities, ISRI saw a need to increase safety programs for our "unseen workforce"--our professional drivers.
