摘要

This paper describes driving safety support systems (DSSS) intended to prevent crossing pathaccidents at unsignalized intersections, especially those between vehicles and pedestrians that occurwhen a non-right-of-way vehicle merges into right-of-way traffic. This system was developed from theperspective of effectively supplementing and extending a DSSS that was put in practical operation inJapan in July 2011 through the use of infrastructure-vehicle communication. Specifically, overheadsensors are used to detect traffic on the right-of-way road in a position that is difficult for anon-right-of-way driver to see, as well as pedestrians or bicyclists in the crosswalk of the right-of-wayroad or approaching it on the sidewalk. That information is transmitted to the non-right-of-way driveras quickly as possible via infrastructure-vehicle communication using Dedicated Short RangeCommunications (DSRC). The information is presented via the navigation system as a means ofcalling the driver’s attention to the situation. This system is designed to support safe merging bynon-right-of-way vehicles.
