I was recently asked if I could provide an explanation of the Scottish skills system and where the forest industry sits within it. As it has often been said that the skills system exists in a state of perpetual evolution, my initial response was "Where would you like me to start?" Given the number of agencies and organisations involved, not to mention the fact that support mechanisms are constantly being developed, it would probably be impossible to provide a sufficient explanation in an article suchas this, so I won't even try. Rather, I will be looking at one particular industry qualification - the Scottish Modem Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber. Before I look into this programme in more detail however, I thought it worth highlighting the different educational qualifications that are available.
