Seismologists studyearthquakes. We usea tool called a seis-mometer to record theshaking and then try tounderstand what hap-pened before and duringthe quake. I also studyearthquakes that took placehundreds of years ago—before we had seismometers. Looking at theearthquake history of an area can tellus what might happen there today.
