In many ways, there is a great divide between daily clinical practice and clinical research. Whether it is due to lack of experience or the perceived time commitment, many physicians will avoid any involvement in "research." In truth, the vast majority of physicians frequently do engage in research through the act of reading the literature. Regularly perusing the table of contents of journals and reading the articles of interest is, in fact, a type of research. A more specific form is when one actively reviews the literature using a convenient search engine to answer a specific question, such as, "Will oral antivirals speed recovery in patients with new-onset vestibular neuritis?" Research, then, is not an additional, optional component of practicing medicine but rather an integral part.
