Three different concentrations of 2, 4-D, i.e. 10-3M, 10-6M and 10-9M were applied on chickpea plants at one, 3, 5 and 7 weeks after germination, during a field experiment conducted in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 2001 to 2002. Significant effects on the different growth and yield parameters (pods per plant, fresh pod weight per plant, dry pod weight per plant, seeds per pod, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant) was observed when 10-3 M (C1) 2,4-D was sprayed on the plants at 3 to 5 weeks from the mean germination. The application of 10-6 M (C2) 2,4-D also resulted in the enhancement of different yield components compared to the control. Foliar applications of 10-9 M (C3) did not affect the results significantly. However, treatments involving 10-3 M 2,4-D (C1), applied at 7 weeks after germination, revealed optimum values for various yield parameters.
