What was the impact of the introduction of the national minimum wage on gender pay gaps? Since the implementation of the Equal Pay Act in Britain in 1975, male and female wage rates have gradually drawn closer to each other, although there remains an overall gender pay gap of around 20 percent (see amongst others, Harkness (1996) and Manning and Robinson (1998) for evidence of this for the UK, and Blau and Kahn (1992) for similar evidence for the US). Harkness (1996) estimates that around half of the decline in the overall gender gap since the mid-seventies is a result of increased educational attainment and work experience amongst women. Makepeace, Paci, Joshi and Dolton (1999) also find clear increases in the amount of work experience and the length of job tenure in recent cohorts of British women.
