Total anaerobic count and toxingenotype for C perfringens isolates in 155 non-outbreak food samples from retail outletswere tested by multiplex PCR as reservoir for poisoning in humans. Clostridium perfringensenterotoxin in stool samples from 150 persons in contact with same food samples weredetermined by ELISA. Approximately 2.6% of the tested meat and retail meat samples werecontaminated with C. perfringens. Laboratory criteria for C perfringens in food does notinclude detection of chromosomally located enterotoxin gene with low count of C.perfringens. C perfringens enterotoxin (CPE) is responsible for diarrhea and crampingsymptoms.
