Glucocorticoids can cause serum electrolyte imbalance affectingmembrane action potentials. Two groups of 5 Holstein 6-10 month old calves were given1mg/kg intramuscular dexamethasone sodium phosphate or 1mg/kg isoflupredone acetate on2 consecutive days. Blood samples were taken at day 0 (1 st administration), 1 (2 ndadministration), 2, 3, 5 and 7 for determination of serum Na + , K + , Cl - , Ca + , Mg + and P + .Electrocardiograms were recorded from calves on same day of blood samplings. Duration of Sand T waves, amplitude of S and R waves and P-R, R-R, S-T and Q-T intervals increased (P<0.05)after dexamethasone and isoflupredone administration. R-amplitude decreased to base line at5 th and 7 th days in both groups. Serum K + , Cl - , Ca + and P + concentrations declined (P<0.05) afterisoflupredone administration and were lower than in cows given dexamethasone. Findingssuggest that changes in serum electrolytes may have been due to isoflupredone anddexamethasone affecting ECG. The result must be interpreted with caution as they were notcompared with saline controls.
