Geneticdiversity and a phylogenetic tree of Khoozestan river buffaloes (40) was determined bymitochondrial DNA sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out using hyper variableregion 1 (519 bp) D-loop sequences with 18 different haplotypes from 21 polymorphic sites.The 18 haplotypes are rich in A/T content as in other mammals. A phylogenetic tree wasconstructed from the Khoozestan buffalo sequences and representatives of publishedhaplotypes of river and swamp buffaloes and clustering suggested common origin.Khoozestan buffalo are similar to domesticated river buffalo from other world areas.
