Debate exists regarding pa-tellar resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Non-resurfacing may result in anterior knee pain, sublux-ation, dislocation, fracture, or need for later resurfacing. Replacement of the patello-femoral articulation may result in fracture, subluxation, dislocation, loosening, failure, or anterior knee pain.No consensus has been reached among surgeons on this issue.Patella fracture is rare, with 0.05% reported in unresur-faced and 0.2%-21% reported in resurfaced patellas. These fractures may be traumatic or stress fractures. Os-teonecrosis of the patella may predispose to fracture.
