Effect of salts and organic solvents on the reaction of methyl violet by sodium hydroxide in micellar environment

Cationic micelle of cetyl pyridium chloride (CPCI) are known to increase the rate of reaction of dyes Methyl Violet (MV) with the hydroxide ion. Whereas the anionic mecelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) inhibit this rate. The addition of monohydric alcohol viz., ethanol, n-propanol, n-buitanol and solvent like acetone, ethylene glycol, DMF and dioxane decreases the CPCI catalysed rate of carbinol formation and on the other hand increase the anionic micellar (SDS) inhibited rate. The effectiveness of these solvents in reducing the extent of overall inhibition by sodium dodecyl sulphate has been found to follow the order: ethylene glycol < n-propanol < n-butanol. These trends are discussed with reference to the probable factors that are responsible for the change in the reaction rate in the presence of organic solvents. Effect of various salts viz., KCl, KBr, KNO_3, K_2SO_4 and NaCl has also been studied in presence of CPCl catalysed reaction.
