Field experiments conducted to determine the influence of N levels (0, 75, 112.5 or 150 kg N ha~(-1)) on the growth and yield of rice in the coastal saline soils of Karaikal, revealed that increase in N level increased the leaf area index up to 150 kg N ha~(-1). Application of 150 kg N ha~(-1) resulted in the highest number of productive tillers hill~(-1). The number of grains panicle~(-1) and test weight also showed a linear relationship with N level. The grain and straw yields were higher by 202 and 126 percent at 150 kg N ha~(-1) over control.
