The world today is awash in digital data. It's estimated that more than 2.5 exabytes (2.5 × 10~18 bytes) of data were being churned out every day in 2012, with 90 percent of all of the world's data created in just the last two years. The quintillions of bytes of "Big Data" collected by millions of networked sensors, and generated by users of smartphones and other networked devices, have spurred wide discussion of the opportunities to be mined from the data—and the challenge of properly analyzing it all.
